September 9, 1925 – July 19, 2017
Iris Mooney, a long time Langley, BC resident, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Wednesday, July 19th at the Sidney All Care Residential Care Home, in Sidney, BC, where she had resided for just over two years, due to failing health and to be closer to immediate family. Iris was a nurse at the Langley Memorial Hospital, where she was a fixture for nearly forty years in charge of the maternity department. During her retirement function in 1985 it was stated that during her tenure in maternity she had delivered, helped deliver and had in her care somewhere in excess of 20,000 babies, at the time eclipsing the population of Langley City. Langley was home to Iris for nearly 70 years and she was extremely passionate about the community. Iris was elected as the first ever woman to the Langley City Council, where she served for many years. She was a devout member of the Sharon United Church in Murrayville and worked tirelessly for organizations such as the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Langley Christmas Bureau and the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. Iris was recognized for her various community efforts by way of being bestowed with numerous accolades, including “Citizen of the Year”, having a park named in her honour, “Woman of the Year” and “Senior Citizen of the Year”. Iris will be sorrowfully missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her son Charlie, daughter-inlaw Dawn, grandchildren Megan and Matthew, sister Jean Seymour and her many nieces and nephews. Iris is predeceased by her husband Doug, sister Verna and brothers Bob and Dave. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. A Celebration of Life is planned for 1:00 PM, August 29, 2017 at the United Churches of Langley, located in Murrayville at 21562 Old Yale Road, Langley, BC.
