Pig vigil held in front of Langley plant

Animal activists held a vigil for pigs at a local plant.

A group of animal rights activists held a vigil Sunday morning outside a Langley pork processing plant.

Langley Pig Save had several members standing on the sidewalk near the Britco Pork facility in the 22900 block of Fraser Highway.

“We want to remind the public that their food is coming from a place of horror,” said Rebecca Abbott, one of the organizers.

Abbott and several others held up signs dubbing pigs “Friends, not food” and asking people to honk in support of their cause.

A security guard was nearby on Britco’s property during the event.

Abbott said the goal of the protest was to bear witness and to say goodbye to the animals, if any were brought in on trucks.

Pig Save Toronto has been in the news during the past year after activist Anita Krajnc was charged with mischief in 2015 for giving water to pigs on their way to a slaughterhouse.

The trial took place during the summer and in November, but a decision is not expected until next spring after final arguments.
