Vancouver Police have decided not to lay criminal charges in the death of a Langley woman who fell out of a party bus last January.
On the evening of Jan. 9, Chelsea Lynn Mist James, 23, was one of the passengers in a bus heading along West Hastings Street.
When the bus made a left turn onto Burrard Street, the woman lost her balance, fell into the stairwell, and out through the passenger door.
James was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Collisions Investigation Unit and Commercial Vehicle Unit investigated over nine months.
In consultation with engineers, they found that a mechanical malfunction had occurred in the door of the bus, and with low pneumatic pressure, was the main contributing factor to the death of James.
Although no criminal charges will be recommended, the owner and driver have been fined under the Motor Vehicle Act.
They could also be liable under civil action.
