Silver earns $10,000 purse for Langley rider

An Aldergrove woman was among those competing in the 2017 Cloverdale Rodeo’s ladies barrel racing.

Aldergrove rider Carmen Pozzobon walked away from the 71st annual Cloverdale Rodeo $10,000 richer.

The local woman earned second place or silver in the ladies barrel racing competition.

She was one of dozens of winners who split $330,000 in prize money at the May long weekend rodeo, before a “record-breaking” crowd of 21,000 fans.

Pozzobon came in first on Friday, with a time of 15.947 seconds, which won her a cool $2,800.

Then, Saturday, in rodeo pool A, she came away with second place with a time of 16.062 seconds, winning another $1,500.

In Saturday’s and Sunday’s pool B, she didn’t place in the top 4, meaning she didn’t earn any extra cash in that competition. But during the Monday finals, she made up for it, placing second with a 15.964-second time and earning the $10,000.

In excess of 110,000 guests took in the long weekend four-day Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair events at the fairgrounds, enjoying fireworks, traditional fair foods, the midway, live entertainment, and the rodeo competitions in the Stetson Bowl.

“Families had a blast” in the country fair with the Kidz Zone, ConeZone, and Agri Zone. Other must-see attractions for visitors included the lumberjack show, the BC Country Music Association Pavilion, the sixth annual world freestyle round-up skateboarding competition, and an outdoor living pavilion.

Sunday night brought out country music fans to a sold-out performance at the Longhorn where former Langleyite and Juno nominated country music artist Aaron Pritchett performed fan anthems like Hold My Beer and hits off his newest album The Score.

And, of course, on the rodeo front, this part of the festivities brought out what organizers described as returning favourites and new contenders who all battled for the top spots in each of the four events: bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, and barrel racing.

“One of the most memorable Cloverdale Rodeos on record and in an unprecedented turn of events, the bull riding competition went to a ride off as all eight riders were bucked off before they could finish their rides. Albertan ride off winner Scott Schiffner took home the $45,000 in winnings,” said Stacey Cheverie.
