The Quality Inn, tucked away at 201st Street and 64th Avenue, struggled to make it as a hotel.
But the hotel, which opened in 2010, is now a BC Housing site that is being turned into supportive housing.
The 50-unit hotel is being converted to 49 units of supportive housing plus space for programs and offices.
BC Housing has partnered with the Stepping Stone Community Services Society which will manage the facility, and Fraser Health which would offer treatment.
BC Housing has scheduled a public meeting for 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Langley Events Centre to outline the project, the agencies involved, and the services planned, as well as receive input from residents.
After the meeting, a summary will be prepared and submitted as part of BC Housing’s application for rezoning of the property that sits in the Township.
Supportive housing is intended to help people get off the streets permanently. That starts with a safe place to live and connecting them with services that can include mental health, addiction and medical services, income supports, as well as education, training and life-skills programs.
According to BC Housing, the cost of providing supportive housing to a homeless person is less expensive and has better outcomes compared to the cost of providing that person with an emergency shelter bed.
Stepping Stone is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1984, helping people in Langley in the areas of mental illness, homelessness, risk of homelessness and poverty.
At the Monday, Oct. 30 meeting, the public can view display boards starting at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., there’s a presentation by BC Housing and Stepping Stone. Then from 5:45 to 7 p.m., a panel made up of BC Housing, Stepping Stone, and Fraser Health will receive input from the public and take questions.
