Langley Family Christmas: Mom’s white cookies

Diane Thornton's family has made these holiday treats over the generations.

Mom’s White Cookies

3 ½ cups white flour

1 cup white sugar

½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp cream of tartar

1 cup of butter

3 eggs

Mix soda and tartar together then add to flour and sugar. Work butter in with your hands – add eggs one at a time.

Bind the mixture together with your hands.

Knead and roll out – cut into shapes.

Bake 5 to 7 mins at 350 degree oven. Ice when cool.

This old family recipe was and is still a family favourite. I made these cookies with my grandmother and mother, and now I make with my grandchildren when they visit from Australia.

We have family in Canada, England, and Australia and these cookies are made every year in each country. These cookies are great for cutting into festive shapes and then iced.

They are the taste of Christmas in our household.
