Langley Players take the sold-out Grandkid to regional competition

A group of Langley thespians will be on stage in White Rock Friday.

The sold-out show The Grandkid closed Saturday night at the Langley Playhouse.

But the run of this popular community theatre production is not over.

There will be at least one more showing, this time in White Rock.

The TheatreBC Fraser Valley Zone Festival – the regional competition for community theatre – is running this week. This year, the competition is hosted by the White Rock Players Club.

The week-long series of performances at the Coast Capital Playhouse (1532 Johnston Road, White Rock) features eight different plays — all by Canadians, in honour of Canada’s 150th “birthday” — adjudicated by Fran Gebhard. The winner of the Fraser Valley region, announced Saturday at a gala evening, will then head to provincial finals (Mainstage) in Vernon the week of June 30 to July 7.

The productions started Saturday, with Abbotsford’s production of The Life History of the African Elephant by Clem Martini and Offtopic Theatre and Chilliwack School of Performing Arts’ production of Unity.

Today (Monday, May 22), there’s a production of Homechild by Surrey Little Theatre at 12:30 p.m.

Langley’s widely lauded entry, a comedy by former B.C. playwright John Lazarus, is a challenging two-hander featuring Kristine McCallum as Abby Rothstein and Marko Hohlbein as Julius Rothstein. It is on stage until Friday night.

Here’s the rest of the schedule:

May 22 — 8 pm The Little Years by John Mighton, Emerald Pig Theatrical Society, Maple Ridge

May 23 — 8 pm Bingo! by Daniel MacIvor, Stage 43, Coquitlam

May 24 — 8 pm The Romeo Initiative by Trina Davies, Chilliwack Players Guild

May 25 — 8 pm How It Works by Daniel MacIvor, Opening Nite Theatre, Mission

May 26 — 8 pm The Grandkid by John Lazarus, Langley Players Drama Club

May 27th – 6:30 pm Gala – White Rock Players Club, Fraser Valley Zone Festival 2016
