Langley high school spotlights student art at evening showcase

R.E. Mountain Secondary hosts Arts Incorporated every second year. This year’s event is Feb. 8.

The public is invited to meet some emerging artists, woodworkers, computer techies and more at the R.E. Mountain Secondary Arts Incorporated evening next Thursday.

Arts Incorporated is a school-wide event featuring works by students.

“When the public attends they will encounter a visual arts show case, music performances, video work, Home Ec student demos, drama performances, and presentations by our auto, woodworking, textiles, and media arts including drafting, and computer technology classes,” art teacher Toni Belton said.

Arts Incorporated runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 8 throughout the school at 7849 202A St. That way a wide array of student work can be showcased, including visual arts, ceramics, photography, video, music, drama, textiles, automotive, woodworking, home ec, media arts including drafting, and computer technology.

“This event started because of enrolment issues, and wanting to ensure students were aware of the robust elective options we have at REMSS,” Belton said. “This will be our third show, and we’ve been doing it every two years because it’s a huge presentation.”

The evening is a glimpse into modern education and close to 1,000 people are expected to visit the art exhibition.

“We really want to showcase the variety of talented students that we have at our secondary school, and show parents the hard work that their children do at school, on top of their academic schedules,” she said.

The evening is also an opportunity for students to showcase their works to an audience.

“We feel that it is a good way to show school pride, as well as pride in their own work. Showing their work in public gives them confidence,” the teacher added.
