Langley art show all recycled items

Earth Day in Langley will be all about the three Rs – recycle, reuse and revamp.

April 22 is the second annual Upcycle Design Challenge Art Show.

The show will feature the inventive results of community members on view from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the LAC Gallery at 20550 Fraser Hwy. The event is free.

The pieces have been made by Langley residents out of at least 75 per cent recycled/reused material.

Last year’s Upcycle Challenge brought in more than 30 entries.

“Each artist created something totally unique,” Township solid waste coordinator Krista Daniszewski said. “We had everything from a coffee table made of hockey sticks and a mat weaved from plastic bags, to jewellery made out of leather jackets and even a life-sized [metal] ‘hiker’ man.”

This year’s entries were turned in earlier this month for judging. During the art show, the public can pick the people’s choice winner.

First place will win $500, with second place earning $200, and third place receiving $100. Prizes will be awarded based on creative use of material, originality, the percentage of reused material utilized, practicality, and artistic merit.

The Upcycle Design Challenge is a joint project between the Langley Arts Council and Langley Township.
