Free paddling Saturday one of many North Langley events

Several events during summer take place on the banks of the Fraser River.

Events coming up this month will bring people to the Fraser River for fun and history.

Try paddling

People tried out padding on Bedford Channel Saturday morning for free.

The Bedford Channel Paddle is courtesy of the Derby Reach Brae Island Parks Association.

From 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. there were opportunities to try kayaking or paddling a 12-person voyageur canoe. The equipment and training were provided, and it was open to all ages.

Reel ‘em in

The association also supports the Learn to Fish. A session is scheduled for the evening of Aug. 9.

This event is for ages eight to 15. They will learn to ID fish and how to fish in freshwater. Before attending on July 14, people must obtain a free tidal fishing licence, which is free online for children. And the young anglers must be accompanied by an adult when they fish Aug. 9.

Register in advance at Participation for children is free but a $5 donation is appreciated. The event is presented by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and takes place at Derby Reach Regional Park.

Bear Necessities

Metro Vancouver Regional Parks hosted a free, all ages bear-themed gathering on Saturday at Edgewater Bar from 2 to 4 p.m. The drop-in event taught about bears.

This was a pop-up station where people can meet a park interpreter and learn about Metro Vancouver parks as well as the featured plant or animal.

History buffs

Simon Fraser University professor Dr. John Clague will lead the Fraser River History Walk on the evening of July 26.

People are asked to register in advance at

The walk and talk runs 6 to 8 p.m. People are asked to meet at Edgewater Bar, 21801 Allard Cres.

Another pop-up station will be out for people to stop by on Saturday, July 28. From 2 to 4 p.m., stop by Derby Reach Regional Park for the Curious by Nature booth with a spotlight on the fish of the Fraser River.
