Love: Langley woman recounts battles for taste supremacy

Love: Start your own family traditions - a special section of the Langley Advance published Dec. 8, 2016

I can remember Christmases over the decades with my mom making her stuffing and my dad on the other side of the kitchen island making his coleslaw, always in competition with one another, and always keeping “their recipe” a secret.

These are two simple but amazing dishes that were part of Christmas dinner for as long as I can remember. And, now, these recipes are a part of Christmas for my sisters and I, and our grown children as well.

My mom and dad are both gone now, but every year, as we make mom’s famous stuffing and dad’s delicious coleslaw, our families always make the time to connect and reflect.

Mom’s Famous Stuffing

Make the night before (except for the butter) and let sit at room temperature with a tea towel over the bowl until ready to use.

• Two loaves bread

• 1 medium chopped onion

• Salt, pepper and sage to taste

• 2-3 tbsp butter

Mix bread, onion, salt, pepper and sage the night before to blend ingredients and flavours. Blend together with fingers until consistent and a bit squishy (may require a small amount of water).

Just prior to stuffing the turkey, add the butter and mix again.

Add small amounts of water a bit at a time until the stuffing forms a ball and holds together.

Stuff the turkey. Then you have to wait patiently until the deliciousness is done!

Dad’s Delicious Coleslaw

• Cabbage

• 2 tsp vinegar (more if you like a bit more tang)

• 1 cup mayonnaise

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 2 tbsp celery seed

• 3 tbsp milk

• 2-3 tsp white sugar

Blend all ingredients together and pour over cabbage (previously chopped to desired size), mix together and enjoy every crispy bite.
