For those who use electric wheelchairs or scooters, Langley will be a chance to set a world record and gain some recognition this month.

On the weekend of July 13 and 14, the Electric Vehicle World Record Event of Pos-Abilities will be held at the Langley Events Centre.

Created by the Langley Pos-Abilities Society and Danny Halmo, the event will include a 24-hour electric vehicle endurance challenge and a parade of electric vehicles.

Both will be attempts to crack the Guinness World Records book.

Zosia Ettenberg of Langley Pos-Abilities is one of the organizers, and is hoping that a lot of people with physical disabilities from all over the Lower Mainland will come out to take part.

"It'll bring more atten-tion to the fact that we are part of the community," said Ettenberg, who uses a wheelchair herself. "We deserve to have access just like everybody else."

The electric vehicle parade will be named after and dedicated to Cliff Steele, a Langley resident who recently passed away. He had dedicated himself to fixing up electrical mobility vehicles, free of charge.

Mobility devices have exploded in popularity over the past few weeks, getting cheaper and finding new users as the population of Canada ages.

In addition to scooters and powered wheelchairs, there are a number of new commercially available electric scooters that are meant for getting around town, the Segway device, and electric golf and utility carts.

All are welcome for the parade, which needs 219 such devices to complete a 3.2 km parade to compete for the Guinness record.

The 24-hour vehicle challenge is a kind of electric version of the 24-hours of LeMans race.

Up to 24 teams will take part, wearing costumes, and trying to post as many laps as possible over a single day.

Many participants are expected to use the race to raise money for Pos-Abilities, which works to provide wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility aids to those in the community.

"We're really hoping to get people coming from Vancouver," said Halmo. This is only Halmo's latest effort for charity in Langley, after his events in the past to raise money for Food Banks.

HandyDART has arranged for special bus runs to bring people from several areas, including the Surrey King George SkyTrain station, from within Langley at Langley Mall and Walnut Grove Community Centre, and from Maple Ridge Library to the events.

As it's a special event, those using HandyDART can sign up early, starting June 30. Anyone having trouble booking their ride to the event should contact 778-772-4431.

For those not taking part, the event will be a good chance to see, or show off, any electrically powered vehicles from cars down to small scooters.

For the parade, registration begins as early as 9 a.m. at the LEC on July 14, and the actual parade and world record attempt will take place at 1 p.m.
