Who was Private A. Alexander of the Royal Highlanders of Newfoundland?

The medals of Private Alexander were found in a vacant apartment in April when the local RCMP were conducting an unrelated investigation.

The officers noticed the medals, presumably stolen, along with a bag of coins, all in small denominations, from a variety of British Commonwealth countries.

Langley RCMP officers have tried to track down the rightful owners of the medals, without success, said Cpl. Holly Marks, a spokesperson for the detachment.

The Star and Victory medals are of note, both were issued to all ranks of the military who saw service during the First World War, said Marks.

Because Newfoundland was not part of Canada until after the Second World War, Newfoundlanders fought under the British flag.

The back of the Victory medal is engraved with the identification 2374 PT. A. ALEXANDER R. HIGHRS.

Anyone who might know the rightful owner of the medals, or any descendents or family of A. Alexander, a Newfoundland war veteran, should call the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.
