Langley cyclist Svein Tuft has earned his eighth Canadian road cycling title with a win in the individual time trial portion of the Canadian Road Championships in Quebec.

Tuft, racing for the Orica Greenedge team, posted a time of 47:26 on a 39 kilometre course, his fifth consecutive Canadian title.

“I have been putting a lot of emphasis in the time trials,” said Tuft. “I recovered well from the Giro d’Italia, and today it is the dedication of all the efforts that the technical team has made. It was perfect today. I’m really happy. I just did 12 minutes of warming up in the heat. I was super hydrated in the last two days.”

Time trials see competitors take off one at a time to race for the best times possible over a relatively short course.

Fellow Langley cyclist Christian Meier (Orica Greenedge) took second place in the elite men at 2:08 behind the winning time, while Hugo Houle (SpiderTech) finished third and also ranked as the top U23 rider.

Despite his win, Tuft won’t be the sole road cyclist representing Canada at the London Olympics this summer. That honour will go to his fellow B.C. cyclist Ryder Hesjedal, who just won the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Canadian ever to win one of the three classic European tours.
