The nationally top-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans wrapped up their pre-season schedule on Saturday with a three-set win over Saskatchewan.
TWU's men's volleyball team prevailed by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-23 at the Jack Simpson Gym on the University of Calgary campus.
The win sees the Spartans finish the Dino Cup with a 2-1 record, including a win over Calgary and a loss to Alberta, and complete its pre-season with an 8-3 record against CIS competition and a 10-6 mark overall, including the five matches they played while representing Canada at the U23 Pan American Cup.
The Spartans, who hit .468 as a team, were led by Brad Kufske who had 11 kills and four digs, Lucas Van Berkel (10 kills and three digs), and Dan Jansen Van Doorn (seven kills on eight attempts and two blocks). Setter Steven Marshall had 35 assists, two aces, and two blocks.
"It was a pretty good match for us and our best offensive performance of the tournament," Spartans' coach Ben Josephson said.
"Steven had his best setting game, which was good to see his progression. We could have served tougher and we missed too many serves in the second half of the match, but overall it was a solid way to finish the preseason."
The first set was a highly efficient one for both sides as the teams combined for just four attacking errors, but it was the Spartans, hitting .577 compared to the Huskies .571, squeaking out the win late.
In the second set, TWU was much more dominant as it cruised to a seven-point win while hitting .333 compared to Saskatchewan's .208.
In the third and final set, the Spartans were again an efficient group, hitting .481 as a team, as they pulled away late to earn the set and the match.
For Saskatchewan, Joel Dyck had a team-high seven kills while Matthew Busse had six kills and two blocks and Jordan Nowakowski had six kills and three aces. Setter Chris Gilbert had 24 assists.
The Spartans will now prepare for their Canada West opening weekend when they will play a home-and-home series with No. 10 UBC Oct. 26-27. The Spartans play at UBC's War Memorial Gym Friday and at the Langley Events Centre Saturday.
