KO rounds out winning decisions

A KO, a decision, and a split decision all came out in local boxers' favour during a roadtrip to Richmond

Port Kells boxers went threeand-0 on the weekend at an amateur boxing show in Richmond.

First up was Tom Bennett of Port Kells in a 147-lb. bout against Richmond's Steven Chang of Hon Lees Gym.

Bennett was the aggressor throughout the bout, landing some good body shots early.

A determined Chang fought back with some good counter-punches, but he was not able to hold off a relentless Bennett, who kept coming forward and consistently managing to land the harder shots.

After three rounds, the decision went to Bennett.

Next was Port Kells middleweight Jaime Chadwick, in a 160lb. bout with Williams Lake boxer Kanyon Gleeson.

Chadwick started slow, and the hard-punching Gleeson took advantage, winning the first round with some hard right hands.

Chadwick made an adjustment in the second round, however, and after landing some nice jabs, caught an over-anxious Gleeson with a well-timed left hook, sending the Williams Lake boxer down for the count.

It was Chadwick with a KO in the second round.

Port Kells boxer Julian Kim rounded out the night in a 178-lb. bout with Harrison Boxing Club's Raj Johal.

Johal came out strong, with Kim responding in similar fashion in a real give-and-take first round.

Kim boxed well in the second round, making Johal miss, and landing more solid combinations.

A relentless Johal took the third round, as he started to get to a tiring Kim, but it was not enough for the judges, and Kim took the match by split decision.

The coaches at Port Kells feel that the fight was decided by only a few punches, and defensively, Kim was just a little better - and that's what got him the decision.

Port Kells Boxing Club hopes to have a full slate of boxers on Friday, March 2, at the Langley Cascades Casino boxing show.
