Two weeks ago, she came seventh in the under-19 Canada Cup events. The week after that, she took gold at the under-17 Canadian Mountain Bike Championships in Canmore, Alta.
Now she's testing her skills against fellow B.C. riders in the Summer Games in Langley.
"I've always liked to bike, but a couple of years ago I got a cyclo-cross bike and put some road tires on it, and it was super-fast and fun," Wakeling said.
She joined a local group, the Comox Valley Cycling Club, and started training.
Before getting into cycling, Wakeling had done a little bit of cross-country skiing, and she'd learned to ride a unicycle, but she had never really been competitive, she said.
She still isn't - at least, not most of the time.
"I'm not really competitive until I'm on my bike," Wakeling said.
She was surprised by her recent top performances.
"I hurt my shoulder eight weeks ago," she said. "I didn't really know how it was going to go."
Wakeling will compete against the other girls riding in the Summer Games, but on Friday, the coaches had her riding laps with the boys, as she can keep up with them quite well.
