The Langley 98 Xtreme is riding a wave of momentum heading into the provincial championships in Maple Ridge in July.

The local girls softball team won the district championship this past Sunday, beating the 99 Abbotsford Outlaws.

This adds to the Xtreme's victory at a tournament in North Surrey in late May, and silver medal at the Kelowna Spring Sizzle Tournament earlier this month.

The Xtreme opened the U14 B tournament in Kelowna with a near perfect game against the Surrey Storm 99, allowing just one hit while putting seven runs on the scoreboard in a 7-0 victory.

After handling the Delta Sunfire 15-2, the Xtreme faced a more formidable opponent in the form of the Ridge Meadows Rage 98. The Rage ended up edging the Xtreme 5-3 in what Xtreme head coach Clay Ferguson described as "an entertaining game for all."

Following the loss to the Rage, the Xtreme faced the Kelowna Heat, a team that had beaten Ridge Meadows 4-2 the previous day.

The Xtreme showed resilience by clipping the host Heat 5-4 in a game that saw a solid defensive performance by game MVP Allison Evens.

The Langley girls finished third in the round robin, led by the pitching trio of Amy Dutton, Aliya Paroo, and Arielle Kotanko.

They also received some stellar batting from Hannah Ferguson, Sarah MacDonald, Aymee Schwandt, Angela Berdusco, and Hayleigh Giesbrecht, who collectively had a .695 batting average, and some strong defensive play from Kennedy A. Jones, Chantelle Gouthro, Alexa Hladiuk, and McKenna Nickel, while injured player Cassie Lumsden provided tremendous support throughout the tournament, Ferguson said.

During the playoffs the Xtreme's first opponent was the Delta Invaders 99, which the Xtreme defeated by a 12-7 count.

With only 30 minutes between games there was no time to rest for Langley's next opponent, the 98 Surrey Storm, a powerhouse of a team and the tournament favourite.

After falling behind 5-1, the Xtreme clawed back into the game after Angela Berdusco hit a two-run triple to narrow Langley's deficit to 5-3.

The Xtreme shut down the Storm the rest of the way, and scored two more runs to tie the score at 5-5. The tie breaker saw Hladiuk scoring from third base on a defensive over throw, to give the Xtreme a 6-5 victory.

The Xtreme then met up once again with the 98 Rage in a final that was a seesaw battle up until the fifth inning, when Ridge Meadows exploded for five runs to win 8-3 and take the gold medal.

Overall, the 98 Xtreme has competed in four U14 B tournaments, coming away with one first place finish, a pair of second place finishes, and a third place result.
