The Samuel Robertson Technical senior girls basketball team finished second in the tournament they hosted Jan. 27 and 28.

The Lady Titans demonstrated a balanced attack and good defensive hustle in defeating Garibaldi Secondary 47-11, according to Glenn Whittington, girls basketball coach at Samuel Robertson Technical.

"Senior guard Audrey Mpuanga returned from a four-week layoff to score 13 points for the victors, and seniors Melissa Lambert and Patrice Vandenberg scored eight points each for the Titans," said Whittington.

Natasha Akbarizadeh earned player of the game honours for Garibaldi.

On a sour note, Katy Caverly sprained her ankle and was unable to play the rest of the weekend.

Next up for the Titans were the Mountain Eagles from Langley.

"Outstanding effort and team play keyed the SRT victory," noted Whittington. "Shauna Pearce scored 11 points, including the first three-pointer for the Titans this year."

Patrice Vandenberg was the player of the game for the Titans, scoring 17 points and playing excellent defense. Tanitia Eggert chipped in with ten points, and she and Shauna Pearce were the defensive leaders on the team.

"In the final game against Mission, the Lady Titans played outstanding defense but a little more luck on the offensive end in the first half would have helped them," Whittington explained. "They only shot two of 20 in the first half, finding themselves down 25-7 at the half."

An invigorated and determined Titans squad came out and played their best quarter of the season, cutting the Roadrunner's lead to nine points. But, the girls ran out of steam in the fourth quarter, finally succumbing to Mission.

The Titans were led by Mpuanga and Vandenberg and saw excellent defensive performances by Kim Verstraeten and Franny Abdullah.

Player of the game for SRT was Tanitia Eggert, who played multiple positions due to injury and foul trouble by some of her teammates. The player of the game for Mission in the final was Megan Kaczmarek who had an excellent game for the winners.
