B.C. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (MIDGET DIVISION)
Who: Langley Stampeders vs. Coquitlam Falcons
Where: McLeod Stadium
When: Sunday, Dec. 2. Opening kickoff is 4: 30 p.m.
The Langley Stampeders are on a roll - one that has taken them all the way to the B.C. final.
After defeating the No. One midget-aged football team in the province and defending provincial champion White Rock Titans one week ago, the Stamps faced another tough test this past Saturday.
This new challenge came in the form of the No. 2-seed Meadow Ridge Knights.
When the dust cleared, Langley's players and coaches celebrated a 32-17 victory.
The win gives the Stamps an opportunity to play the Coquitlam Falcons for the B.C. championship on home turf this Sunday, Dec. 2. Kickoff at McLeod Stadium is 4: 30 p.m.
Saturday's semifinal started out with both defences holding the opposing offences to minimal gains and few first downs.
Late in the first quarter the Knights drove the ball to the Stamps' seven-yard line before opening the scoring with a field goal to move ahead 3-0.
In the second quarter the defensive pattern continued until, with less than three minutes to go in the half, Stamps' quarterback Cory McMurchy capped off a 71-yard drive with a two-yard bootleg run into the end zone. The drive was not easy as a trio of holding penalties against the Stamps left them in three first and twenty situations.
They were still able to move the ball with key catches from wide receivers Ryan Porteous and
Daniel Adimora to keep the Stamps' drives alive.
The touchdown brought the score to 7-3 Langley at the half.
The second half was all Stampeders, who erupted for 25 points as their offence rolled over the Knights.
After the Stamps' defence recovered a fumble early in the third quarter, McMurchy threw a 37-yard strike to Porteous to put Langley up 14-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Meanwhile the Stamps' defence - again led by their defensive line of Jon Jon Miao, Sukh Toor, Shaheem Charles-Brown, and Braeden Norcliff - completely shut down any running game the Knights attempted.
The Stamps opened the fourth quarter with a long drive that stalled on the Knights' 14-yard line. McMurchy capped it off by kicking a 21 yard field goal to widen the visitors' lead to 17-3.
The Knights responded with a touchdown four minutes into the fourth quarter to make the game interesting at 17-10.
But then the Stamps destroyed any chance the Knights had for a comeback as they took the next possession and moved the ball 73 yards down the field, using their powerful running game.
Running backs Kalen McMurchy, Brian Desmaris, and Raegan Doucette seemed to move the ball at will, marching it down deep into Knights' territory.
Doucette capped the drive with a seven yard run into the end zone to make the score 24-10 with four minutes remaining in the game.
A desperate Knights team took the next possession but was unable to move the ball, and the Stamps took possession with under two minutes remaining.
On the second play of the final Stamps' drive, running back Sameer Nasiri scampered 61 yards for the final Langley score.
The Knights managed a late touchdown with 32 seconds remaining in the contest to make the final score 32-17.
Stamps' head coach Shane Thompson was proud of his players.
"This is the first time all year we have [had] a full healthy roster," Thomson said. "These guys have played shorthanded all year and for them to get healthy [and] go on this roll is a testament to the character on this team."
