After dropping the opening set, Trinity Western University's men's volleyball team rallied to win the next three as it knocked off UBC in B.C. Cup action Monday at Yale Secondary.

TWU's four-set win moves the Spartans to 3-0 in B.C. Cup play.

Set scores Monday were 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-16.

Playing in the old high school gym of Spartans' outside hitter Brad Kufske, TWU recovered from a slow start in the first set, turning things around in the second set and then rolled to tidy wins in the third and fourth sets en route to capturing the match.

The win, which saw the Spartans use a different lineup combination in each set, gives the Spartans 13 of a possible 15 points through their three preseason B.C. Cup matches.

The Spartans also improved to 6-1 against CIS competition this preseason.

"We had a chance to look at four different lineups tonight and get lots of different guys in, which was good," Spartans' coach Ben Josephson said, following the victory. "Overall, I'm pretty pleased, especially with how we played in the second half of the match. Tonight our middles were really strong and Brad Kufske had a great game in front of his home school. I'm happy with the overall result and we're ready to move forward for next weekend."

The Spartans will now travel to Calgary, where they will take part in the Dino Cup Oct. 19-20, playing Calgary, Alberta and Saskatchewan. While in Calgary, TWU will also play Mount Royal in an exhibition match Oct. 20.

The Spartans open their Canada West regular season Oct. 26-27 when they play a home-and-home series with UBC, with Friday's match being played at UBC and Saturday's at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans' CIS national championship banner will be raised before the Oct. 27 home-opening match.

The B.C. Cup includes UBC, TRU, UBC Okanagan and TWU, competing all season, including one exhibition match and two regular season matches against each team, for a provincial trophy.

The points system is similar to that of international play, where-as a three-set win gives five points to the winner and zero to the loser, a four-set win gives four points to the winner and one to the loser, and a five-set win gives three points to the winner and two to the loser.

Zero is a bleak number, especially in sports.

Players with the Trinity Western University men's hockey team must be tired of looking at zero in the win column, after dropping their fourth game in a row to start their B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

A 7-1 loss to Eastern Washington University at the EWU Recreation Complex Saturday keeps TWU winless at 0-4.

Despite outshooting the Eagles 45-41, the Spartans could only beat EWU goaltender Cash Ulrich once.

His teammates Bobby Ward and Elliott Martin each added a goal and two assists and Ryan Pajimola had three assists for the home side.

Spartans' goalie Tim Zwiers started the game but was pulled early in the second period after allowing four goals in 19 shots.

Harry Fredeman played the rest of the game and gave up three goals on 22 shots.

Jake Harcoff scored the lone goal for TWU with assists going to Jamie Russell and Josh Stephenson.

The Eagles are now 2-0-0-1 with both of their wins coming against TWU.

Ahead 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes, EWU shooters filled TWU's net during the second period.

AJ Sanders, Nick Redding, Martin and Ward scored to put the game out of reach, at 60 heading into the third period.

Harcoff finally broke the Eagles' shutout when his long shot weaved through traffic and beat Ulrich at the 8: 16 mark of the third frame.

The Eagles' Uriah Machuga put another one on the board late in the third to round the scoring.

The Spartans are back on the ice this Saturday (Oct. 20) when they play Simon Fraser at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre at 7 p.m.

Selkirk College 6, Spartans 1 The Spartans dropped their first first road game of the season by a 6-1 score to the Selkirk College Saints Saturday in Castlegar.

The loss saw the Spartans' record fall to 0-3 on the season, while Selkirk improves to 3-0.

The Spartans had a rough go with the Saints, as Selkirk outshot TWU 64-25, including a 26-8 advantage during the second period.

Fredeman made 58 saves in the loss, while Selkirk's Chris Hurry made 24 saves to record the win.

Despite being outshot 19-7 in the first period, the Spartans only trailed 2-0 after allowing a pair of power-play goals by Selkirk's Logan Proulx.

The Saints' Thomas Hardy opened the second period scoring to put Selkirk up 3-0. Less than a minute later, the Spartans got on the board on a goal from Trevor Beaupre, with assists going to Harcoff and Matt Chaput, to narrow the home team's lead to 3-1.

Selkirk's Jordan Wood restored the three-goal margin at 11: 09 of the period.

But the final minute of the period was when the Saints broke open the game with two goals in 31 seconds.

Nick Cecconi scored with 40 seconds remaining and Hardy followed it up with a goal with nine seconds remaining to make the score 6-1 heading into the third period.

The Saints had a 19-10 edge in shots in the final period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
