Twenty-four hours after losing in overtime to Prince George, the Langley Rivermen ended up on the winning side of the extra frame.

Matt Ustaski scored 4: 17 into the first overtime period to lift Langley's B.C.

Hockey League entry to a 2-1 victory over the Vernon Vipers Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

It was the first meeting of the season between the teams, and entering play both were on four-game losing streaks.

The Rivermen came out flying and at one point had a 9-1 shot advantage.

Aaron Dolby opened the scoring on a blast down the right wing that beat Vernon netminder Austin Smith beneath the glove for his second on the year.

The Rivermen dictated the pace in the opening period and the Vipers were lucky to only be down by one.

The second period had no scoring as both goaltenders, James Barr (Langley) and Smith, stopped every shot they faced.

The Vipers had a much better period, firing 15 shots towards Barr.

Once again the Rivermen held the lead in the third period and things were looking good for the first 15 minutes.

But with 2: 17 to go Vernon's Ryan Renz fired a shot off a face off. The puck found the top corner to tie things up, leaving the home crowd speechless.

Overtime was needed and in the extra period, Ustaski was the hero. Austin Azurdia fired a shot wide of the goal, but Ustaski drove hard to the net and flicked home the puck off a big bounce from the end boards.

It was the Illinois product's first career overtime winner and it capped off a great weekend for him, firing two goals in as many games.

PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS 5, RIVERMEN 4 (OT)

The Spruce Kings exacted revenge against the Rivermen Friday at the LEC.

Coming into the game, the Rivermen held a 2-1 edge in wins in the season series, with all three games being decided by one goal.

The squads kept that trend going, with the Spruce Kings working overtime to snare the win.

The 'Men got off to a good start as they opened the scoring just after the five-minute mark, as Ustaski buried his second of the year.

Ustaski took a great feed from James Robinson in the slot and made no mistake, beating Kirk Thompson blocker side.

The Spruce Kings responded courtesy of a Coltyn Hansen marker a few minutes later to even things up at 1-1.

The second frame was a carbon copy of the first.

The 'Men opened the scoring on a beautiful goal from Mario Puskarich.

On a two-on-one, the veteran winger took a pass from Jakob Reichert and beat Thompson on a great snap shot.

However, the lead would not last long as Justin Rai batted the puck out of mid-air, beating Langley netminder Barr below the crossbar.

Both goaltenders were solid in keeping the game at 2-2 going into the third period, which turned out to be the most entertaining of the night.

Puskarich scored his second of the game on a fluke play in front of the Spruce Kings' goal. He was checked in the crease by a Spruce King forward only for the puck to float by Thompson for an own goal on the Prince George side.

The visitors did not dwell on that tough break as they tied the score a few minutes later, when Rai potted his second of the night on a shot from the slot that banked off a Rivermen skater in front of Barr.

The tie did not last long as a shift later Langley's Ben Greiner scored his second of the year on a great rush off the face-off.

Derek Sutliffe drove wide around the defense and spotted an oncoming Greiner. In full flight, Greiner deflected the puck into the open goal.

With time ticking down, Hansen tallied the equalizer as he stuffed home a loose puck with under four minutes to go to send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Prince George's Mitch Eden was the hero as he found a loose puck in front of Barr and lifted the puck into the open net to claim the remaining point.

The Rivermen had troubles once again with the lead. They led four times only for the Spruce Kings to tie it up each time.
