Langley's junior team played a complete 60 minutes in downing the Victoria Grizzlies in their own den.

The skid has been snapped.

The Langley Rivermen ended a five-game losing slide with an impressive 5-1 win over the Victoria Grizzlies Sunday afternoon.

Making the win all the more impressive is the fact the Grizzlies, even with the loss, lead the B.C. Hockey League's Island Division with a 17-8-0-2 record.

The Rivermen who improved to 10-12-0-4, continue to sit in fifth place in the BCHL's Mainland Division.

The 'Men took full advantage of a Grizzlies squad that was playing its third game in three days.

Goaltender James Barr was tapped for his fourth straight start for the Rivermen, while Michael Stiliadis got the call for the 'Grizz.

The Grizzlies came out flying in the first few minutes, but James Barr was able to weather the storm and make a few key stops to keep the game scoreless.

The Rivermen would build off that momentum and opened the scoring on a powerplay goal from Mario Puskarich. The veteran winger made a nifty toe drag move around a Victoria defender in the high slot before ripping a snap shot along the ice for his 15th goal of the year.

The Rivermen were outshot 12-6 in the opening frame, but carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.

It was a fantastic period for Barr, as the Langley coaching staff had hoped he would bounce back after Saturday night's loss in Alberni Valley.

The second period would be the best 20 minutes of the weekend for the Rivermen.

Just over the four-minute mark, James Robinson registred his much-anticipated first BCHL goal.

The Alberta native has been snakebitten all season long, but he was able to take a pass from Evan Campbell off his skate and ended up in the back of the goal.

Robinson was not done hitting the scoresheet as shortly after, he stripped a Victoria player of the puck in the attacking zone and set up Evan Anderson for his third goal in a Rivermen uniform.

That play was hard work personified as Robinson did not stop moving his feet the entire shift and put a picture-perfect pass on the tape of Anderson.

The 'Men capped off the scoring with 40 seconds to go in the frame courtesy of Puskarich, who potted his second of the day, again on the powerplay.

Thomas Nitsche fired a one timer that missed the net, but the puck took a lively hop off the end boards and landed right on the stick of Langley's leading scorer, who was all alone in the slot with an empty net.

Trailing 4-0 entering the third period, the Grizzlies had a great start to the last period scoring 17 seconds in on a goal from Myles Powell.

However that would be it for the Grizzlies for the rest of the game and Austin Azurdia made sure he iced the game in the visiting team's favour as he buried Langley's third powerplay goal of the contest with under seven minutes to go.

The Rivermen's powerplay found its stride going three-for-five, while the penalty kill managed to kill off all five Victoria power plays. Barr earned first star honours, facing 35 shots.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs 4, Rivermen 3

The host Bulldogs nipped the 'Men on teddy bear toss night at Port Alberni's Weyerhaeuser Arena.

It did not take long for the stuffed bears to fly on to the ice as Alberni's Dylan Haugen opened the scoring just 20 seconds after the opening faceoff.

The Dogs added to their lead just before the three-minute mark on a power play goal from Jared Wilson.

The Rivermen would not go away quietly.

Nathan Craft, who was traded by the to the 'Men by the Dogs earlier in the week, scored against his former club to cut the lead to one. Jakob Reichert stole the puck from behind the Bulldogs net and fed a beautiful pass out in front of the net to Craft, who snapped home his sixth goal of the season.

With time running out in the first period, the Rivermen evened the game on a powerplay goal from Puskarich. It was a pretty looking marker as Puskarich finished a fantastic passing play out of the corner from Robinson and Mark Whiteley for his 15th of the season.

The Bulldogs regained their lead in the second period on a goal from Matthew Hansen. Hansen looked like he was going to lose the puck on a partial breakaway, but was able to hang on to it and sweep home a shot five hole on Barr.

The lead would last just under 11 minutes before Langley's Trevor Cope tied the score at 3-3. Bulldogs' goaltender Jay Deo misplayed the puck behind the goal and it ended up on a platter for Cope, who snapped the loose puck into the open goal. Under two minutes later Hansen notched his second of the period on a quick snap shot down the left wing that beat James Barr over the right pad.

The game got really interesting in the final frame. The Rivermen's Mitch McLain was hauled down on a breakaway and was rewarded a penalty shot. The Minnesota native tried a stick-side shot but was denied by Deo.

The Rivermen would then have a pair of five-on-three opportunities to tie the game, but were unable to cash in on either of them and that would be the game.

Deo stopped 27 shots in picking up the win, while Barr was charged the loss, facing 30 shots.

Missed opportunities were the story for the 'Men, as their powerplay unit went 1-11 on the night.
