Olympians sizzle outdoors at Manta Rays' Moses Lake meet

 

 
 
 

Langley's Brayden Kells touched the wall first in five events to win the aggregate award.

A Canadian contingent of 13 Langley Olympians Swim Club (LOSC) members headed south of the border last weekend.

Once through Customs, the Olympians headed to an outdoor 50-metre pool in sunny Moses Lake, Wash., where they spent three days.

The Sizzlin' Summer Meet, hosted by Moses Lake Manta Rays, was attended by more than 450 swimmers from 22 teams from Washington State, Oregon, and B.C.

The Olympians team comprised of swimmers from both Langley and Abbotsford.

LOSC finished the meet in eighth place, a notable achievement bearing in mind the Langley group made up one of the smallest teams in attendance.

Leading the way was 10-year-old Brayden Kells, who was the aggregate winner in the boys 10 & under category.

He placed first in the 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, and 100m freestyle; second in the 200m IM, 100m fly, and 50m fly; and third in the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke.

Tobyn Smith, nine, of the Abbotsford Olympians achieved her B.C. AA qualifying time for 11-year-olds in the 100m backstroke (1: 29.56), placing fourth in this event.

Tobyn also placed third in the 9-10 girls 50m backstroke.

Other Olympians' swimmers placing in the top three included:

First place

Hannah Weinkauf, 14, in the 13-14 girls 50m freestyle.

Second place

Josie Field, 10, in the 10 & under girls 200m freestyle and 50m fly; and,

Second place

Josie Field, 10, in the 10 & under girls 200m freestyle and 50m fly; and,

Hannah Weinkauf in the 13-14 girls 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke.

Third place

Josie Field in the 200m IM, 100m fly, and 100m backstroke;

Bailey Herbert, nine, in the 10 & under girls 100m and 50m breaststroke events; and,

Hannah Weinkauf in the 200m backstroke. Bailey Herbert also achieved 100 per cent best times at the meet.

Langley swimmers placing in the top eight in individual events included Meredith Clark, 12, Bryce Dong, nine, and Mackenzie Dong, 11.

"This meet is a great way for some of our swimmers to finish their season," said Brian Metcalfe, head coach of both the Langley and Abbotsford Olympians teams.

"Travelling down to the States and competing against some new and tough competition is a great challenge. We raced well and came away with a large number of medals and top eight placings."
