Olympian collects eight golds in Walnut Grove waters

There's something about swimming in familiar waters that brings out the best in members of the Langley Olympians Swim Club.

LOSC hosted its sixth annual Short Course Meet at Walnut Grove Pool last weekend. Attended by more than 350 swimmers from the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Kamloops, the meet consisted of heats in the morning with finals being held in the evenings both days.

Langley swimmers dominated the competition, coming away with many medals, best times, and club records.

Leading the way was 10-yearold Joshua Kim, who took gold in all of his eight events: the 100m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m fly, 50m freestyle, and 200m IM.

Along the way, Joshua set club records in six swims. His new club records in the boys 9-10 category were in the 100m breaststroke (1: 24.12), 100m freestyle (1: 07.78), 50m backstroke (36.56), 100m backstroke (1: 18.39), 100m fly (1: 22.04), and 200m IM (2: 46.48).

Joshua also came away with 100 per cent best times during the meet.

His 10-year-old teammate Josie Field dominated the girls' 10 & under age group with first place swims in the 50m fly, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 100m fly, and second-place results in the 50m freestyle and 200m IM. Josie also achieved 100 per cent best times.

Other Olympians' swimmers placing in the top three were;

GOLD

Siobhan Board, 15, in the 15 & over girls 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke;

Hillary Metcalfe, 14, in the 13-14 girls 200m IM, 200m breaststroke, and 100m breaststroke;

Martha Metcalfe, 16, in the 15 & over girls 400m freestyle, 200m IM, 100m fly, and 400m IM; and

Justin Schramm, 14, in the 13-14 boys 400m freestyle, 200m IM, 100m fly, 200m freestyle, 200m fly, and 200m backstroke.

Justin additionally set club records in the 400m freestyle (4: 11.38) and 200m breaststroke (2: 35.80).

SILVER

Siobhan Board in the 400m freestyle, 200m IM, and 400m IM;

Lisa Grier, 12, in the 11-12 girls 400m IM; Michael MacDonald, 17, in the 15 & over boys 400m freestyle and 200m freestyle;

Hillary Metcalfe in the 400m freestyle and 400m IM;

Martha Metcalfe in the 200m breaststroke and 200m backstroke;

Robyn Nakano, 13, in the 13-14 girls 200m backstroke; and

Justin Schramm in the 400m IM.

BRONZE

Lisa Grier in the 400m freestyle; Bailey Herbert, 10, in the 10 & under girls 100m breaststroke and 50m fly;

Joshua Franklin, 16, in the 15 & over boys 50m freestyle and 200m freestyle;

Renae Ledoux, 13, in the 13-14 girls 100m breaststroke;

Michael MacDonald in the 200m backstroke;

Hugh McNeill, 9, in the 10 & under boys 100m backstroke;

Martha Metcalfe in the 200m fly; and Robyn Nakano 13 in the 100m fly.

LOSC swimmers who placed in the top eight were;

Chelsea Borrowdale, 13, Bryce Dong, 10, Kennedy Douglas 13, Karl Hallquist 16, Alysse Franklin 13, 11year-olds Brayden Kells, Ellen Lansing, and Avery Martin, Ryan Moloney, 17, Pearl Schramm, 11, and nine-year-old Quinn St. Pierre.

A number of LOSC athletes achieved 100 per cent best times over the weekend. They included Sierra Cook, 11, Bryce Dong 10, Josie Field 10, Brayden Kells, 11, Joshua Kim 10, Mary Langhorst,

"It's great to see so many club records being broken and the majority of our swimmers making finals and going on to place in the top three," Olympians' head coach Brian Metcalfe said. "All the kids raced well and with many parents helping time and officiate, the meet was overall a huge success."
