Clash at the Cascades 3 was a huge hit in more ways than one.
The more than 400 amateur boxing fans who attended Friday's show at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre got their money's worth, according to City Boxing trainer Dave Allison, who helped promote the event.
"If there was any doubt that the sport of boxing is back, it was erased Friday night," Allison said, of the COMBSPORT (the British Columbia Combative Sports Association)- sanctioned card.
The main event saw two Langley fighters box five rounds for the B.C. title.
Veteran Jake Wietzel, 29, a Langley Secondary grad, took on up-and-comer Shawn McDonald, 20, a graduate of Walnut Grove Secondary School.
Weitzel, of Abbotsford's Blue Corner Boxing, and McDonald, from host City Boxing, battled hard over five solid rounds during a competitive fight with a back-and-forth flavour.
In the third round, McDonald dropped Weitzel, who got off the mat and, in the fifth and final round, proceeded to land a bomb on McDonald.
McDonald showed some whiskers by staying on his feet.
The bout was close and the judges disagreed on the outcome, with the split decision being awarded to McDonald.
During most of the fight Weitzel was on the ropes looking for room that McDonald did not allow, however Weitzel was always dangerous.
With the win, McDonald is now the B.C. welterweight (147 pound) champion and was awarded the belt. He will defend his title against Jay Kelly of Richmond at the Fall Brawl on Oct. 9 at Langley's Coast Hotel & Convention Centre.
The feature bout of the evening was being called the "Battle of Brookswood," and what a battle it was.
A pair of 17-year-old Brookswood residents, Beau Brooks of Revolution Gym and Mat Andreatta of City Boxing, went back and forth in what many regarded as the best fight of the night.
"This fight was old school all the way for two youngsters [who] showed tremendous skill," Allison said. "The crowd was on their feet during most of the fight."
The decision was split, as was the crowd.
Some shouted for another round to decide what they saw as a very close fight. Most did not want the action to end.
The judges were also divided on this bout, which went Andreatta's way via decision.
"A rematch to sort this out is most likely going to happen," said Allison, who trains Andreatta. "It was one of those fights where you know it could go any way. I would not been have been surprised if Brooks got the nod and I was not surprised we got it."
The fight was in the super featherweight (130 pound) division, however, both boxers weighed in under the limit.
Andreatta weighed 127 pounds prior to stepping into the ring, while Brooks tipped the scales at 128 pounds.
Also on the card was Langley's Darren Cooper of City Boxing, who lost a competitive fight to Jesse Brenner of Surrey Boxing.
"Cooper's jab worked well but Brenner was just a little more aggressive and deserved the unanimous decision," Allison said.
Gurpreet Buttar was scheduled to compete but his opponent did not make the weight.
The next show will be Saturday Oct. 9 at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre.
