The 18th edition of the Clash at the Cascades amateur boxing series saw some last-minute changes, but that didn't take away from the excitement level.

The 300 fans who took in the action Friday at the Coast Hotel and Convention Centre enjoyed an entertaining night of boxing, with a high number of stoppages.

The main event was a light heavyweight tilt involving Chad Gerow of Revolution Langley and Darren Featherstone from Bisla Martial Arts, with the City title at stake.

The first round started slowly, however, as the round progressed, Gerow found his range with an overhand right.

This punch hurt Featherstone. He pressed the fight into the second.

The Gerow right was not to be denied and the bout went into the books as a second round TKO victory for the local boxer.

Gurpreet Buttar of City Boxing dropped a split decision to David Rojo of POWD in a tough, back-and-forth battle.

Light heavyweights Julian Kim of Port Kells took on Kory Grim in a very exciting bout at 175 pounds, according to Clash matchmaker Dave Allison.

Grim won the first round before fatigue set in. He ended up losing a split decision to Kim, who is on a winning streak.

Kim was the only Port Kells Boxer to win at Clash 18.

His clubmate Russ Lavery faced Francis Codillo of Contenders. The lightweight fight started in a competitive way, but Lavery could not solve the southpaw style of Codillo, who took a unanimous decision.

Jamie Chadwick of Port Kells had a very tough night against human buzzsaw Jarek Brown of Action Boxing.

"Chadwick had his moments but Brown would not be denied and stopped Chadwick in the third," Allison reported.

Scott Woodward, 19, of Four Corners boxed for the first time, taking on 17-year-old Mark Magano of Action Boxing.

The first round was very entertaining, Allison said.

"The second round started the same [way] as the first round ended until the halfway mark when Woodward tired and Magano just kept on going," Allison said.

Referee Matt Lee wisely stopped the bout in the second round.

In a draw bout, 11-year-old Josh Lauriente and 12-year-old Anthony Patrignan, both of Port Kells, competed in their first boxing match.

Also, Jillian Sask of Port Kells and Kate Robinson from Action participated in a very competitive public spar.

The next amateur boxing show takes place Friday, July 13 with the tag name Clash 19.

The main event is expected to be for a B.C. heavyweight championship bout pitting "Big" Nate Nowalk of POWD against Adam Quiredo of the North Burnaby Boxing Club.

Querido recently won a unanimous decision over City heavyweight titleholder Ritchie Evanochko in a non-title fight.

Former Canadian champ Gord Racette has a prospect in 18-year-old heavyweight Russell Leske, who is scheduled to make his debut when he faces Dustin Turkey of Blue Corner.

Andreatta returns

Brookswood Secondary grad Matt Andreatta received good news on two fronts last week.

He found out he had been accepted to UBC and will start in the fall, and also got the goahead from his doctor that he can compete again after fracturing an ankle during his last bout in March.

Andreatta is scheduled to take on Garnet Samuels of Contenders on the July 13 show.
