The BC Summer Games in Surrey proved to be a gold medal experience, on and off the pitch, for a group of Langley soccer players.
Jessica Hunt and Katie Ward, both students at James Kennedy Elementary, products of Langley FC, and members of the Magnuson Ford Mariners U-13 Premier League team, were integral parts of the Zone 3 Fraser Valley gold medalwinning team last weekend.
Joining them on the Zone 3 squad were fellow Langley residents Makenna Dieterich, Tavia Jasper, and Madilyn Melnychuk.
All three play for Surrey United.
Fraser Valley went undefeated in the preliminary group stage, defeating teams from Zone 8 Cariboo-North East and Zone 5 Vancouver-Squamish, and drawing against Zone 6 Vancouver Island-Central Coast.
In the semifinals, the Fraser Valley team defeated Zone 4 Fraser River Delta, setting up a gold medal rematch against a very strong Zone 5 Vancouver-Squamish side.
After a very challenging and hard fought 0-0 regulation game, team captain Jessica Hunt and her Valley teammates emerged victorious by winning 4-2 in penalty kicks.
The gold-medal winning Zone 3 team, coached by Kathleen Acaster, Kelsey Acaster, and Olivia Aquiar brought together a talented group of girls from Langley, Surrey, White Rock, Coquitlam, and Pitt Meadows.
While many of the girls will play against each other in the coming year in the EA Sports Premier League, they shared a golden moment in Surrey.
