Former Trinity Western University setter Ben Ball had a 2011/12 season to remember.

Trinity Western University alum Ben Ball has added the Sport BC University Athlete of the Year award to his collection of 2011/12 accolades.

The former Spartans' setter, who was CIS men's volleyball player of the year and Canada West Athlete of the Year last season, was presented with the Sport BC award Thursday night at the River Rock Show Theatre during the 47th Annual Athlete of the Year Awards.

"Winning this award is a huge honour. Individual awards are kind of funny to me because there were so many people involved with me at TWU. I am nowhere as an individual. My parents supported me through the good and the bad, on and off the court. Our coaches put in countless hours to make sure we reached our potential," Ball said. "My teammates made playing volleyball fun every day and the staff and student body at TWU being so invested and supportive. I feel extremely blessed and wouldn't trade my five years at TWU for anything."

TWU head men's volleyball coach Ben Josephson commented on his highly decorated setter and his new award.

"The awards keep rolling in for Ben and I couldn't be happier for him. For a guy who was so instrumental to our program's success these past few years but whose contribution was not fully recognized it's great to see it coming to him.," Josephson said. "Ben makes it look easy, as all great players do, but he worked tirelessly to prepare himself to perform the way he did. When preparation meets performance great things ensue and this is just another tangible reward for his preparation."

Over the duration of the 2011/12 season and post-season Ball, who hails from Abbotsford, was named Canada West Athlete of the Year, CIS/BLG Athlete of the Year nominee, CIS Player of the Year and MVP of the national championship, CIS first team All-Canadian, Canada West Player of the Year and Canada West first team all-star.

The veteran setter, who earned his second CIS men's volleyball championship gold medal in 2011/12, averaged a conference-record and CIS season-best 11.54 assists per set to finish his brilliant career with 2,742 assists, a Trinity Western all-time mark and the second-highest total in Canada West annals.

In addition to Ball the BC sport sector honoured the best of BC's sport community Thursday at the River Rock. Athletes, coaches, and officials from across the province were recognized with awards from 17 distinct categories, celebrating the recipients' achievements over the past year and their dedication to sport.
