How magnanimous of Councillor Steve Ferguson to donate his $340 travel allowance to charities [Travel allowance going to charity, Dec. 11 Letters, Langley Advance].
He listed eight charities plus countless other groups. It sounds like hed be stretching that $340 a little thin.
Wasnt that pay increase of 19 per cent, this time last year, enough? If he does not have to pay tax on one third of his salary and expense allowance, why would he need a travel allowance?
Its a darned lucrative part-time gig those people have. Seems to me most have other, rather profitable, part-time jobs and/or pension income from previous employment.
The rate of inflation for October 2012 was 1.2 per cent, and in December of 2011 it was 2.3 per cent. So what makes the Township councillors and mayor think they are worthy of such an increase in pay?
Heres a pay structure for their part-time positions as Township councillors.
For every Township meeting they attend they get $100 flat rate. If the meeting runs for half an hour, they get $20. They will be paid $10.25 per hour for every hour they spend on Township business at Township Hall, and they will have to punch their time cards, using a time clock. Hours are not to exceed 25 per week (it is a part-time job). No Township business will be done from home. They each get a $25 per month travel/mileage allowance. All appropriate taxes will be deducted.
For every Township meeting he attends, the mayor gets $175 flat rate. If the meeting runs for a half hour, he gets $50. He will be paid a monthly salary of $1,000, and gets a $55 per month travel/mileage allowance. All appropriate taxes will be deducted.
Not in it for the money, indeed! I wonder whatever happened to ethics, morals, accountability, integrity, conscience, and honesty?
