My wife and I have taken to spending some Sundays in the Fort Langley area. We enjoy the area and its residents.
The village is very pleasant, so I was very troubled to read that a developer is once again looking to make a quick buck [Yea on Forewest plans, Nov. 29, Langley Advance].
Several years, if not decades ago, I took my wife to Salt Spring Island. It was all new to her, as she came from Winnipeg. Well, we had a grand time. Roughly 12 years later, we went over again, and how it had changed! Traffic jams and the hustle and noise that one associates with Vancouver were there tenfold.
What had happened was eye opening. A group of real estate developers had gotten elected to the trust and decided that more people should move there, and they knew how to do it. Well, they didn't know how to do it, not by a long shot.
Depending on which Gulf Island, they simply cannot support hundreds or thousands more people. The developers make a ton of money, and everyone else pays.
When I see city council ignore the will of the people and then speak in tongues about some absurd silent majority, I get mad. It hints broadly that something is rotten in Denmark, and the people of Fort Langley better get off their hind quarters and remove this council as soon as possible .
Crown counsel should look into who is giving money to whom. One only has to look at the mess in Montreal to see the costs incurred by taxpayers to fill the bank accounts of mayors and civil servants .
I am not against all new development, nor is my wife, but some areas need to be kept as they are.
