Public pressure worked once before when the police were hunting for a man wanted in a 2007 hit and run. Now the Langley RCMP has put out a statement once again looking for Mario Guy Martel for failing to show up in court.

He was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

On Aug. 3, 2007, a motorcyclist in Willoughby was seriously injured in a bizarre accident.

A Toyota Supra was being towed down a dark street by a white pickup truck. Both vehicles had their lights off, and the Supra was being towed with a nylon tow-rope.

The Supra struck a passing motorcyclist, throwing the rider into a ditch and leaving the 53-year-old man with injuries to his left wrist, leg and foot and broken ribs. He has been left with permanent disabilities, police said at the time.

The driver of the white pickup truck fled the scene. Police alleged Martel, then 61, was at the wheel of the pickup.

Nine months after the incident Martel turned himself in to police who at the time said that was due to public pressure and media attention.

Martel recently failed to make a court date and now the RCMP have issued arrest warrants.

"It is believed he is living in the 100 Mile House / Williams Lake area," said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.
