Now that the Routley land swap is off the table, the Langley School Board plans to push ahead with two new schools in Willoughby.

Last October the province announced funding to construct a new middle school and money for land and to build a new elementary school.

"The district aims to have the new elementary school open for September 2013 and the middle school for September 2014," according to a statement put out by the district Feb. 8.

The district will have to use land it already owns because the provincial approval did not include money to buy a site.

The district currently owns one five-acre parcel of land in the Jericho area at 206th and 68th and it will acquire a second parcel in the Yorkson area at 208th and 84th as a result of the Routley Land Exchange agreement.

There is no municipal servicing at the Jericho site and the district would have to pay those costs. The district estimates it would add up to nine months on the project.

As well the smaller site would leave little room for greenspace or playing fields.

The Yorkson site is already serviced and will be adjacent to the 70-75 acre Yorkson Community Park that the Township has planned.

Once the middle school is built, the district plans to reconfigure all Willoughby elementary schools to be kindergarten to Grade 5.
