Dear Editor,
Good on Steve Ferguson [Travel allowance going to charity, Dec. 11 Letters, Langley Advance]. It's a nice thought, but he has the $340 a month to donate to charity, and I don't.
And I don't have a lot of time to donate to volunteering, either, as I'm busting my butt to make the money I need to pay for my gas (which includes taxes), car maintenance (which includes taxes), and the occasional car wash (which includes taxes) - none of which are tax deductible like his.
I applaud him for the thought, but he should stop trying to make himself out to be saintly. One third of his salary is tax free, none of mine is. He has a travel allowance, I don't.
The best thing he could do - more acceptable to the taxpayer - would be to vote against the allowance.
Debbie Atkinson, Langley
