Dear Editor,
In Canada there is a parallel of stupidity that runs between the tax man and the Immigration man. Ever since Pierre Trudeau, our government in Ottawa has made the two institutions priorities of employment for tax lawyers, tax preparers, tax consultants, immigration lawyers, immigration consultants, and others, and it is big, big business.
The difference today comes in that the Harper government is expanding the tax man's duties to that of a multi-tasker who harasses people for debts other than tax. Anyone who owes money for student loans knows this full well.
Further, if you are part of an organization like the Suzuki Foundation that dares to criticize the proposed Enbridge pipeline proposal, you may well have the CRA breathing down your neck.
Keep it simple, Steve: bring in a flat income tax system that only collects tax, and stop bringing in unnecessary immigrants to satisfy corporations and individuals who want to pay (less) minimum wages to new Canadians.
