A young woman charged in the 2009 murder of Marc Bontkes in High Knoll Park in Brookswood has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.
The woman, who was a teen at the time and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Feb. 10. She was one of three people charged, two of whom have now been convicted of involvement.
In court proceedings Feb. 9, the court case was scheduled for March 29 and 30 and April 4. Before then both the Crown and the defence will provide written submissions for the judge to review before those dates, including a pre-sentencing report.
The lawyers on both sides said they have agreed on the facts of the case and will contest whether to sentence the teen as an adult or youth.
"I'll be arguing she should be sentenced as an adult," Crown prosector Christopher McPherson told the court.
The young woman was a week shy of her 18th birthday at the time of the murder, March 19, 2009 and was charged in July 2010 with one count of first degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the murder of Bontkes.
"It's not one of those clearcut cases," said defence lawyer Rishi Gill.
Four days before Bontkes murder, 36-year-old Laura Lynn Lamoreux was found shot to death in the 20200 block of 50th Avenue.
In the summer of 2010 the police charged Roy Michael Thielen, 30, and Robert David Bradshaw, 26, with two counts of first degree murder, and with conspiracy to commit murder in the Bontkes homicide as well as charges in the Lamoureux killing.
In October Roy Michael Thielen pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree murder, admitting to killing Bontkes and Lamoureux.
In November Thielen was sentenced to life in prison without parole for 20 years.
Bradshaw's charges are still working their way through the legal system.
