Dozens of businesses in downtown Langley City lost power Thursday when a truck tore through power lines at 203rd Street and Industrial Avenue.
The truck had a large liquid storage tank on the back, which had the ability to tip up on hydraulics.
It was tipped up when the driver headed south on 203rd Street from Logan Avenue just before noon, said Langley City fire chief Rory Thompson.
The truck’s tank clipped at least one power line near Logan, but the driver continued south until he turned right onto Industrial.
At that point, his tank snagged on a bundle of wires that was strung across 203rd. The truck actually snapped a wooden power pole off at its base and left it dangling from the lines. Power lines were strung from the tank like spaghetti.
Power was out from Logan Avenue up to Fraser Highway, with about a block of businesses losing electricity.
Firefighters and BC Hydro crews were on scene to block the area off to traffic and assess the damage. BC Hydro estimated power would be restored to about 300 customers by 4 p.m.
