Some simple supplies and creativity led to the rugby field beside the Langley Events Centre turning into an afternoon fun fair on July 22.

UrbanRoad Church set up Fun in the Sun, a free, family event.

"We do this as a way to give back to our community. We realize that families are always looking for something fun to do that doesn't break the piggy bank in the process," said Michele Yackel, the church's co-lead pastor.

The event ended up being half sunny and half cloudy, meaning the free freezies become a tough sell once the clouds rolled in. But the kids still enjoyed the water events, including walking with a water balloon under the chin, a water balloon target game and a bubble station.

In addition to the always popular bouncy castle, the event also featured inventive games assembled from equipment like a section of gutter, hula hoops and straws.

The group had offered a free, family event at Christmas where people could drop off their children and attend to errands while the kids played games.

That event was at the Colossus Theatre, where the group holds its weekly church services.
