Kosheng Ko and Shu-Chen Huang opened the doors of their Cloverdale home to complete strangers last weekend.

The artistic couple was more than happy to do so, as participants in the first segment of the Langley Art Studio Tour held from Sept. 22-23.

Art lovers toured 21 studios that were open to public viewing over the two days.

Kosheng describes his watercolour paintings as "a kind of music."

"I like to let it flow and become very relaxed," he said.

He added, "I depict my journey in life through painting. The topic is not my major concern; instead, my critical focus is on how I perceive it."

The works on display encompass Kosheng's career from 2000 to 2010.

"The remarkable thing rests on rhythm, which is essentially a flow," Kosheng said, "whereby the water colours allow me to transform my thoughts of people, things, and scenarios into a tangible depiction of beauty."

The hallmarks of Shu-Chen's oil paintings are her clear, forthwright brush strokes.

The husband-and-wife are both graduates of the National Taiwan Academy of Art in Taipei.

Shu-Chen's teaching and art career has spanned 28 years and she has exhibited in Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan.

From 1997 to 2009, Shu-Chen devoted her efforts to art education and held more than 17 seminars about children's art education and the living arts in South Taiwan.

Kosheng has been a full-time artist for more than 20 years. He has participated in numerous solo, group, and exhibitions, and his work won outstanding entries at the City Culture Centre of Taiwan's art show.

His art is on permanent display at the Kaohsiung & Nantou County Cultural Centre.

After the couple moved to Canada in 2005, Kosheng immersed himself in the local arts community, becoming a director with the Langley Arts Council in 2006.

Kosheng was an instructor at the Langley Children's Festival mural creation at Douglas Park in 2007 and took part in the Olympicthemed Paint the Town Red at the Langley Events Centre in 2010.

He took on the role of LAC vice president this year.

Kosheng and Shu-Chen, who have been married since 1985, teach art in their home-based Cloverdale art studio.

Their website is www.koartstudio.com.

The fourth annual Langley Art Studio Tour continues this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
