1950s: East Langley farmers plead for diking of low lands

 
 
 

SEVENTY YEARS AGO

August 22, 1940

The batch of "C" Company of the New Westminster Non-Permanent Militia (Langley) left for two weeks of training in North Vancouver.

Three days of national registration took place in Langley by District Registrar A.E. Sherritt.

SIXTY YEARS AGO

August 24, 1950

The Provincial Dyking Commission could give no promise of assistance to the East Langley farmers who wanted a dike to protect the low land between the bluff and the Glen Valley dike.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

August 25, 1960

The Langley Board of Trade "fully endorsed" plans for Langley City to spend $500,000 to develop a water supply. The matter was to go before City voters on Sept. 7.

Demolition of the old community hall in Sperling was almost finished.

FORTY YEARS AGO

August 26, 1970

A family returning from a funeral came home to find their farming operation and cottage going up in smoke.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

August 27, 1980

A charge of second degree murder was laid following the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Mary Louise Reeves of North Vancouver in an Aldergrove home.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

August 22, 1990

Twelve years after its closure, the Langley City Dump was still creating a political stink. The province declared the site environmentally unfriendly, as a result of seepage of leachates into a nearby creek.

John and Ruby Ormrod celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

TEN YEARS AGO

August 22, 2000

A citizens' committee - set up by Township council - recommended that the mayor and councillors give themselves a 22 per cent raise.

The Latimer Business Park Plan, a proposal for developing the 200th Street freeway interchange, was being prepared for a third presentation to council, after having been shot down twice. This time, some modifications were being made to the proposal.

Langley City opened its new city hall.

August 25, 2000
