May 26, 1932

. Katherine Marr was crowned May Queen at the 10th annual Fort Langley May Day celebrations.

Seventy Years Ago May 28, 1942 . Council members complained that four illegitimate children left as wards of the municipality would cost taxpayers $28 million by the time they 18 years old.

. Eight men were laid off and gravel trucks and equipment taken off the road to save the municipality from a projected budget deficit.

. Air Raid Protection Wardens throughout Langley proclaimed a war black-out exercise to have been a success.

May 29, 1952

. May Day celebrations in Aldergrove were kicked off with a parade headed by the fire brigade, followed by the Duke of Connaught Bugle and Drum Corps of New Westminsters.

May 31, 1962

. Local candidates in the upcoming federal election were: Myrtle Evertt, Social Credit; Toby Jackson, Liberal; Bill McClennan, Conservative; and Barry Mather, New Democratic Party.

. Residents of Glen Valley held their 60th annual community picnic.

Forty Years Ago

May 25, 1972

. Half-full bleachers at Aldergrove Secondary School collapsed just before a band concert. Eight students sustained minor injuries. No cause could be found for the mishap.

. Charlene Moran of Simonds School was crowned May Queen.

Thirty Years Ago

May 26, 1982

. A $2 million elementary school for Langley Meadows and a $5 million addition to Brookswood Secondary School were to proceed, despite an announced provincial freeze on capital projects.

. Dianne Hayles was crowned May Queen in Fort Langley.

Twenty Years Ago

May 27, 1992

. City council refused to pay its share for an air conditioning system at the Langley RCMP detachment headquarters. City counsellors were upset because the decision to install the equipment had been made by Township officials, with-out first consulting the city.

. A police officer was slightly injured when he was dragged by a car after he had tried to apprehend the youth driving it. The vehicle was spotted in Matsqui the next day, and police pursued it into Langley. The driver ran off after the car overturned at the corner of 248th St. and 56th Ave., but police arrested him minutes later.

. About 2,000 salmon fry were killed by a pesticide spill in Langley Creek, headwaters of Murray Creek.

. Tired of waiting for private interests to develop Square One, Langley City council decided to build a civic square on its portion of the property at Fraser Hwy. and Glover Rd.

. The Jacob Haldi Bridge over Bedford Channel in Fort Langley was slated for replacement, at a cost of $2 million.

. An early morning police raid of eight Surrey homes resulted in the arrests of four teenagers thought responsible for a series of commando-style robberies in Langley and other nearby communities.
