The wives of Langleys' mayors are helping make Christmas morning brighter for less fortunate families.

Debbie Froese and Charlene Fassbender have organized the Thank You for Caring Christmas Tea on Nov. 18 to benefit the Langley Christmas Bureau.

Debbie, married to Township Mayor Jack Froese, had thrown a tea during his campaign and decided that, since it helped her get to know more people in the community, that another one should be done.

"After Jack was elected I wanted to give a tea that would give back to the community," Debbie said. "In a conversation with [City Mayor] Peter [Fassbender] and Charlene, Charlene loved the idea of co-hosting a fundraiser for the Christmas Bureau.

So the two women approached the local volunteer-run organization.

"I think the Christmas Bureau is a great asset to our community," Charlene said. "The families that are helped are very grateful and the volunteers are very dedicated, wonderful citizens of our community."

In 2011, the bureau provided gifts for 793 families.

The event will feature singer Cole Armour and two groups from the Langley Community Music School.

"We have an instrumental group and a trio of singers," Charlene explained. "It should be great."

Jim McGregor, who co-ordinates the bureau with Leigh Castron, will act as emcee. There will be volunteers from the bureau there, as well as information about ways people can help out, from giving gifts and cash to sponsoring a family.

"We are asking those who come to bring an unwrapped children's gift, or a cash donation. But our goal is to raise awareness for the Christmas Bureau," Debbie said.

Tickets are $20. There is a silent auction and door prizes. The event runs 1-4 p.m. in the Fort Langley Golf Course, 9782 McKinnon Cres.
