The next H.D. Stafford Good Citizen of the Year will be chosen this winter, and nominations are now being welcomed for any Langley volunteer.

The award has been given out annually since 1980, and last year's recipient is looking forward to seeing who will be next.

Terry Metcalfe is a former Langley Township fire chief and prolific volunteer.

"I think that recognition of volunteers is always good, because we have a great number of volunteers in Langley who don't receive recognition," said Metcalfe.

The award, sponsored by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce, has been given out to high profile locals such as former mayors George Preston and Marlene Grinnell, but it has also gone to those who are known mainly for toiling behind the scenes.

The nominations can come from anyone and anyone can be nominated, whether they normally prefer anonymity or not, pointed out Metcalfe.

If people know someone who deserves the award, "this is the opportunity to say so," said Metcalfe.

Whoever is chosen will be announced at the chamber's Dec. 11 dinner meeting. They will likely be lured there under false pretences - Metcalfe was told he had to go to the meeting to represent Langley Lodge, and didn't even know he'd been nominated.

The award is named in honour of H.D. Stafford, a local politician and business owner who worked tirelessly on projects to make Langley a better place.

Many of those who have won the award in the years since it was founded knew Stafford personally.

Nomination forms can be found at wwww.langleychamber.com or can be acquired by calling the chamber office at 604530-6656. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.
