Development threatening heritage

Dear Editor,

The heritage and life as we know it in the village of Fort Langley is under threat.

The installation of underground wiring will devastate the village for six to 12 months and create a very difficult time for the residents and shop owners.

According to BC Hydro, the lovely street trees and poles will all have to be removed, and the sidewalks broken up and widened. The landscaping all along the route will be impacted by heavy machinery and trucks.

All this will certainly create problems for the businesses, the residents, and Fort Langley Community Hall. There will also be the complications of the water and sewer line connections already in place.

The cost of installing underground wiring and new lamp posts will be more than $4 million. No matter who pays, it is still basically the taxpayer who suffers.

The Langley Heritage Society is asking Township council to defeat the project, and save the money for other more worthwhile causes in the municipality.
