Individuals, community groups, and businesses were honoured at the third annual Langley International Festival Multicultural Gala Dinner and Awards Feb. 2.

The non-profit society that runs the festival devoted to honouring the diversity of the community received a total of 17 nominations for the four award categories - youth, seniors, non-profits and business.

"All the nominees were exceptional, and it was hard for the selection committee to pick the winner in each category," said communications director Sarwan Singh Randhawa.

Mary Kim was awarded in the youth category for her volunteer work to help in promoting Korean culture and for her efforts in building Canadian-Korean bilateral relations.

Harry Dao, who found his freedom in Canada, won the award in the senior category for his continued help to new immigrants in several ways including assisting in finding housing, employment and general settling into their new life in this country.

The Fraser Valley Taiwanese Association won the non-profit organization award for providing services and guidance to the newcomers, and Ten Thousand Villages won the business award for creating opportunities for artisans in developing countries, and establishing trading relationships.

Many dignitaries including MP Mark Warawa, Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman, Township Mayor Jack Froese, Township Councillors Grant Ward, Bev Dornan, and Charlie Fox, City Mayor Peter Fassbender, and City Councilor Rosemary Wallace celebrated the diversity with several others.

Alex Alegria and Mariachi Los Dorados serenaded the gala attendees before and during dinner with Mike Robinson serving as emcee.

Mexico Vivo Dance Group entertained the audience with numerous dances from Mexico throughout the event.

The festival society presented a slide show highlighting the annual event.

"Overall, it was a grand evening celebrating many cultures in our community," Randhawa said.
