Langley City is on the air and on the web.

The City has invested in equipment allowing it to do its own webcasting and provide a digital feed for Shaw Cable's community channel.

Shaw Cable, which provided equipment to broadcast council meetings for various Lower Mainland communities, had told the City its equipment was aging and would not be replaced.

"Shaw was going to stop the live broadcast," Fassbender explained.

He added that the company had enough feedback against the plan that it has reversed the decision and will broadcast.

All City council meetings (two per month) will be webcast but only the first one will be broadcast on the community channel. The second Township council meeting of the month will also be broadcast.

Many communities have invested in digital equipment for covering council meetings and municipal events. "I would discourage members of council from watching the meeting while we're having the meeting," Fassbender joked.

Langley's first webcast council meeting was Sept. 17. Much of the video signal for the Oct. 1 meeting was lost but people can listen to the audio.

The public can access the information that council is discussing at the time and council agendas have been available online for a while as downloadable PDFs.

To access the webcast, go to city.langley.bc.ca and follow the City council link to the meeting schedule page.

"We think that it's going to provide more opportunity for public input," Fassbender said.
