Mounties will be watching out for truck drivers and others breaking the law this week.

Langley RCMP officers held a two-day crackdown Tuesday and Wednesday on unsafe trucks and commercial vehicles.

The members of the Langley Traffic Services unit were joined by the Fraser Valley Integrated Road Safety Unit, ICBC, and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CMVSE) Unit.

The combined force were on the roads, looking for trucks but pulling over other drivers for any infractions they can spot, especially distracted driving, said Const. Craig Van Herk.

Distracted driving remains the top cause of serious crashes involving death and injury, Van Herk said.

Officers were watching out for cellphones and other bad behaviour.

When it comes to trucks, officers conducted inspections with their CMVSE counterparts, making sure the trucks are roadworthy, that their loads are secured properly and are within the correct weight, and that their log books and inspection reports are up to date.

The team-ups of various police agencies for crackdowns on road safety have become a regular feature of local traffic enforcement.

Police did not have details on how many drivers they ticketed by press time.
