Chance to reach out to less fortunate on Dec. 30

Jackie Maclean and a group of volunteers are helping to feed and clothe the needy living in one of Canada’s poorest neighbourhoods.

Jackie Maclean’s final sandwich drive of 2012 is just days away.

Each month, the Langley hypnotherapist and a group of volunteers hand out sandwiches, bottled water, granola bars, and fruit to people living along Vancouver’s downtown Eastside, one of the poorest zip codes in Canada.

The local group returns there this Sunday, Dec. 30 to continue their efforts. They'll also be handing out toques and sleeping bags.

Maclean has a lot to be thankful for, thanks in large part to companies and individuals who have stepped forward to help her.

A Bread Affair continues to donate bread on a consistent basis.

The Daytime Chapter of the Valley Women’s Network created socks filled with goodies for December. Items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, and soap.

A large pack of bottled water was dropped off to Maclean’s home on Christmas Eve.

The Langley Canadian Tire location donated much-needed sleeping bags, and volunteers continue to donate not only their time but also fruit such as bananas and oranges, water, jackets and clothes, and supplies to make sandwiches.

Still, more helpers are always welcome, Maclean said.

“Many hands make work lighter, and more fun,” she said. “As always, we are always looking for volunteers and donations of supplies and/or monies to purchase supplies. Donations of peanut butter, jam, mayo, mustard, ziplock bags, and granola bars [are] appreciated.”

Maclean added, “It would be fabulous to have donations of meats… from local businesses or food chains.”

She is also hoping someone can volunteer the use of a truck or a van for this Sunday.

Maclean is calling on people and business to jump on board and support her non-profit gesture that include who she describes as “some amazing volunteers.”

For more information or to volunteer, contact Maclean at 604-551-4986 or info@ThePowerWithin.ca.
