Langley Township will look at installing crosswalks and making a busy Aldergrove road safer, after a nine-year-old by was hit by a truck.
The boy was struck on Friday afternoon, when he and another boy apparently ran across 29th Avenue near the Aldergrove Community Secondary.
The pickup driver was not impaired or speeding, police say.
Margo McPhalen, an Aldergrove resident, said the road needs changes to deal with a changing neighbourhood.
To the south of 29th Avenue are the secondary and middle schools, the library, and a community centre, and a host of new parks and sports fields added over the past decade.
McPhalen said the residents like the traffic calming that has been installed on 32nd Avenue, which is also a through road adjacent to both parks and homes.
"Yet there are no crosswalks anywhere on 29th," she said.
A large number of children and a high population of children who get around by walking means a need for better safety, McPhalen said.
"Aldergrove is not going to let this accident be the first of many on 29th Avenue," she said.
Mayor Jack Froese said the Township council has already called for a report on safety on the road. Township staff will report back in the coming weeks.
