Basement fire drives out family

A Walnut Grove home went up in smoke early Monday morning.

All three people inside a Walnut Grove house got out safely Monday after smoke alarms alerted them to a fire in the basement.

Langley Township firefighters were called to the home in the 9400 block of 214B Street at about 4:50 a.m., said assistant fire chief Bruce Ferguson.

Two halls, from Walnut Grove and Willoughby, responded and doused the home with water.

The building suffered about $150,000 in damage, Ferguson estimated. The fire scorched the basement, and the upper floors suffered smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire was not yet determined, but it is not thought to be suspicious.
